about me
My name is Johnathan Burkhardt
But feel free to call me Burk.
I started my art/design career as a woodworker, but my obsession for making things quickly grew and I learned leather working, clay sculpting, casting, a little bit of sewing, and a little bit of electrical. if you want to see any of that check out my instagram @burkhardtdesign.
In 2020 I had a few months off of work, like most of the world, so I started to learn Unreal Engine. I’ve been on a quest ever since to collect the most coveted resource know to 3D generalists: the elusive Magic Checkbox. If you have spent any time in Unreal, you know what I mean. They’re the things that novices rip their hair out over, “The guy in the video did all the same steps! Why doesn’t it look the same!” The veteran just opens up google and begins the dig for the right key phrases, the small hints of unanswered forum posts that feel adjacent enough to be another crumb on the trail. Then finally, buried in a 35 minute video from a guy with a heavy accent, at 14:32 he casually checks a box and the heavens open, angels sing and everything looks the way it should be. Now you’re only on hour 2 of the 12 minute video your friend showed you when he asked you to do this thing for him real quick. The Intermediate artist grumbles, “Why isn’t this checked to begin with!” The veteran just smirks, “got another one,” he whispers to himself, and begins the game all over again.
